Whether or not you’re an avid reader, you certainly had to hear about the book “The DaVinci Code”. It was only on the top of the best sellers list for more weeks than one can count. Dan Brown must be one of the richest men in the world right now. And it was a no brainer that somebody was going to turn this masterpiece of a novel into a movie. And what better person to do that than Ron Howard? With past great movies under his belt like “A Beautiful Mind”, Howard was sure to produce a work of art.

Well, things didn’t quite turn out the way he had planned, at least not as far as the critics were concerned. Maybe the biggest problem with this movie was the first problem they encountered before the movie was even cast. Howard wanted Harrison Ford to play the lead role in this film. Ask anybody on the streets and they would have told you that Ford would have been the perfect choice for the part. But he was either not available or didn’t want to do it. The reports vary depending on who you ask. So Howard went to his next choice, Tom Hanks.

Who writes the speeches for Clinton and Obama? They give some very convincing speeches that sometimes, are filled with rhetoric and promises. Is their speech believable to the hearer? Is it just a formal way of looking presentable? How do these Presidential Candidates redeem themselves with a well-written speech when their presidential campaign is in trouble? Well, who really is in trouble right now?

Well, if you listen to the political critics; some of whom insist that they are experts, you can tell that their reporting is sometimes bias and of no substance because no one knows what will happen in the democratic race. It may look obvious for John McCain, but not for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I do not presume to be a political analyst, but I am paying attention to both the political race, but because I am a writer, I have an interest in the speeches that present. Being a Public Speaker requires a certain personality, presentation and aura. I think it is practice that makes one become better at giving a speech.

It is important to have a national discussion on international affairs. Our nation, like all other nations of the world, well we all rely economically on each other. The world is more connected now than ever before in the history of mankind. Everything is inter-related and everything matters. However, when we have such a national discussion on international affairs we ought to be discussing it with folks who have knowledge of all the issues.

May I be so bold to make an observation here? Senator Barack Obama is certainly not the right person to lead such a national discussion. In reality, Paris Hilton, has met more heads of state and traveled to more nations than Senator Barack Obama. Am I being too critical of Barack Obama or giving too much kudos to our beautiful blonde teen idol? Neither.

Even with today’s technology, it’s nearly impossible to construct a persuasive, phone-ringing Yellow Pages advertisement in under 30 minutes. Where did I get thirty minutes from? In 1975, my first gig was designing Yellow Page ads for a large national Yellow Pages publisher. I considered it my “dream job.” Our tight-knit group of creatives would dole out dozens of Yellow Page ads per day, every day. We did our best to make each ad a selling masterpiece BUT we did have a daily quota of 10-15 ads to contend with…Arrange time for breaks, paperwork, etc. and that rate works out to about 30 minutes per ad.

OK, so it takes more than 30 minutes, but why worry about Yellow Page ads?
Even as “online local search” continues to grow at a rapid clip, today’s print Yellow Page directories represent a not-too-shabby $14 billion a year industry, and has morphed into a broader medium that includes BOTH print and online capabilities. In fact, directional media (Yellow Pages, online local search and classified advertising) is expected to top $119 billion by 2010. For all of this, print Yellow Pages are still what they have always been, a very effective means of generating telephone calls and revenue from your most important local prospects.

I believe that the children in elementary school today will be the first generation not to have a better opportunity for success and advancement than their parents. I’m not a predictor of doom and gloom, in-fact, quite the opposite; however, with the expense of raising and educating children, the cost of housing (rent or mortgage) and ever escalating property taxes, the fear of people living longer than their retirement portfolios can sustain them and for many other reasons, parents, in the majority of cases, will just not have the financial ability to help out their children or grandchildren with what traditionally was a parents pride; to help with college and/or help them with their first home purchase. For most families, the expensive wedding might also go the way of the dinosaur.

Job opportunities are not as plentiful as they once were with manufacturing jobs leaving our nation in hoards and droves. Lower paying jobs have been filled largely by illegal immigrants and the Federal Government has told us that Social Security will be bankrupt before elementary school age children will be age 67. At 46, I’m worried that Congress will continue to tax me with higher rates and limits to fund a Social Security bailout, yet, when it’s my turn to collect, they will find some sort of criteria not to pay me like: too many assets, too high an annual income, or too young, as they continue to raise the eligibility age and the ultimate reason not to pay, there just ain’t no more money left!
