WHAT kind of computer does Michael Dell use?

Last April, the company’s Direct2Dell blog reported that the chairman and CEO of the world’s second largest computer manufacturer had begun using a Precision M90 notebook and a handful of open source applications running on Ubuntu 7.04, the latest release of one of the world’s most popular free Linux distributions.

The tidbit about the chairman’s new notebook was yet another sign that the computer maker is taking Linux seriously as a viable alternative to Windows.

Schools, businesses or individuals looking to purchase new computers can save quite a bit of money by buying pre-owned, recently off-lease machines from a reputable dealer.

Businesses lease their PCs for a period of time - typically 2 or 3 years. At the end of the lease, the equipment comes back to close out the lease. All companies go through various cycles of growth at various speeds. This is also true in the way in which the stock market embraces them, and then spits them out, and throws them away. The market darling at the moment going through such a cycle is Dell Computer. This company is now in the process of switching places with also-ran Hewlett-Packard which was out of favor for years.

Since Dell’s inception in the 1984 and later its public offering, the company could do no wrong. Its sales are now approaching $60 billion dollars and its number 25 on the Fortune 500. They have utilized a direct model approach to building PC’s since the beginning. This eliminated the middleman, and allowed you the customer to build your computer to order. In other words, you got a custom made machine. This is also the only company I have encountered with a negative cash conversion cycle. They get your money before they owe it to the vendors who sell them the parts. It’s literally unheard of in business.

I need to disclose upfront that I’m not highly technologically advanced. I know what basic features that I need in a product and I am pretty good about researching and finding them for the best price. My son insisted that he needed a sleek, lightweight, fast running dependable laptop on which he could surf the web, download music and games, do his homework, email, IM and take notes.

I insisted that although I was willing to oblige him this request, I could not justify spending more than a couple hundred dollars (or less hopefully) on a laptop that he might lose or break in no time at all. After spending hours researching cheap dependable laptop and notebook computers on the web, what I came up with was the Dell Latitude C610 model. We both could agree on this model because it suited both of our needs.
